Nandu kulambu is South Indian dish prepared with secret masala 😉 which makes crab more delicious and the quantity of spices should be taken care of as over masala will spoil the dish.When my mom prepares Nandu kulambu me and dad will eat only crab and it would take as atleast an hr to complete our plate 😀 😀 😀 and now karthik also takes lot of time to eat crab 😉 .Always prefer small crabs as it is tastier than big ones.Delicious recipes can be made with crab as nandu varuval, nandu kulambu,nandu briyani.
- Blue Crab-6
- Jeera – 1 tsp
- Cinnamon sticks-2
- Turmeric powder-1 tsp
- Salt-to taste
- Ginger garlic paste – 2 tsp
- Jeera-2 tsp
- Fennel seeds-2 tsp
- Oil-2 tbsp
- Coconut-1/2 cup chopped or 1/4 cup
- Chilli powder-1 tbsp
- Coriander powder-1 tbsp
- Garam masala-1 tsp
- Poppy seeds-1 tsp
- Green cardamom powder-pinch (optional)
- Water- required to grind
- Heat kadai with oil and once hot add the jeera,fennel seeds,coconut,shallots .Saute for about 2 mins.
- Now add chilli powder,coriander powder and then garam masala.Add cardamom powder which is optional.
- Saute for about a min and make sure not to burn the powder.Let it cool and grind into fine paste by adding cashews,poppy seeds and sufficient water.

- Heat kadai with oil and once hot add jeera,clove,cinnamon sticks ,onion and salt.Cook till onion becomes translucent.Add ginger garlic paste and saute for 2 mins until raw flavor disappears.
- Add tomato and turmeric .Cook till tomato becomes mushy by closing the lid for a min.
- Add the grinded paste and sufficient water.Add the crab one by one and cook the crab for about 10 mins in medium high with lid on.
- Once the kulambu boils after 10 mins switch off the stove.You can see the color of the crab is changes to orange color which indicates it is cooked 🙂
- Garnish with cilantro leaf and enjoy with rice.
- Crab just takes 10 mins to get cooked so don’t overcook it.Small Crabs are tastier then the big crabs.So always prefer the small ones as the flesh will be juicy and soft.
- Prepare all the ingredients ready to cook and then start cleaning the crab.My mom says after cleaning the crab it should be cooked soon which will enhance the taste.
