Palak Kichdi | Spinach Rice

Palak Kichdi is one pot quick healthy meal prepared with spiced rice,spinach and  pulses.Palak Kichdi recipe is very easy and nutritious meal which can be prepared for lunch box  for kids as well as adults and goes well with any spicy side dish like potato fry ,kadai mushroom,chicken leg roast . Palak kichdi

Serves : 4 Total time : 25 mins


  • Spinach – 1 and 1/2 bunch
  • Rice-1 cup
  • Moong dal-1/2 cup
  • Cumin seeds/Jeera-1 tsp
  • Chopped Ginger-2 tsp
  • Chopped Garlic-2 tsp
  • Green chili-5 (adjust to spice level)
  • Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  • Oil 1 tbsp
  • Onion-1
  • Tomato-1
  • Water-4 cup
  • Garam masala-1 tsp

To temper:

  • Chopped Ginger-2 tsp
  • Chopped Garlic-2 tsp
  • Red chili-1
  • Hing/Asafoetida- pinch
  • Cumin seeds/Jeera-1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  • Oil-1 tbsp

Palak Kichdi

Detailed Palak Kichdi recipe:

  • Rinse rice and moong dal well in water and soak it for about 15 mins.
  • Add rice,moong dal,water, 1 tsp of oil,2 green chili,turmeric powder in pressure cooker and cook for about 2 whistle.


  • Puree the 3 green chili,spinach with little water for grinding.
  • Heat deep pan with 1 tbsp of oil ,cumin,garlic,ginger and saute for about a min.Then add onion ,salt and cook till it becomes translucent.
  • Add the tomatoes and cook till mushy with lid on so it gets cooked easily.


  • Add the spinach puree and garam masala ,if required add little water and cook with the lid on for about 10 mins.


  • Meanwhile temper the items under to temper section.
  • Add the cooked rice and moong dal to the boiling spinach puree and then combine it well.Pour the tempered items and mix it well.
