Tomato chutney | Thakkali chutney

Tomato chutney is traditional South Indian side dish for dosa,idly or oats upma which is prepared by grinding cooked tomato,onion,red chili powder,garlic,green chili,turmeric powder into fine paste.




This tangy and spicy Tomato chutney is easy and quick recipe which can be prepared within 20 mins.I always ask my mum to prepare this Tomato chutney with hot Idly which is my favorite and this chutney tastes good without tempering too 😉 .You can also check onion chutney , tomato thokku , mint coriander chutney , groundnut chutney, Idly podi

Ingredients
  1. Medium Tomato-4
  2. Green chili-2
  3. Red chili powder-1 tsp
  4. Garlic-4
  5. Turmeric powder- 1 tsp
  6. Medium Onion-1
  7. Curry leaf-5
  8. Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  9. Cumin seeds-1 tsp
  10. Oil-2 tsp
  11. Water- 1/4 cup
  12. Salt- as per taste
To temper
  1. Mustard seeds-1 tsp
  2. Urad dal- 1 tsp
  3. Curry leaf-4
  4. Oil-2 tsp
Instructions
  1. Heat kadai with oil and once hot add cumin seeds,mustard seeds and once it splutters add curry leaf,chopped garlic,green chili,chopped onion,salt.Saute till onion and garlic gets cooked well.
  2. Add chopped tomato ,turmeric powder, red chili powder and cook with lid on for about 10 mins.
  3. Open the lid and add 1/4 cup of water and saute for about 10 mins by smashing the tomato.
  4. Switch off the stove and let it cool.Once cooled grind into fine paste.
  5. If you want to temper then heat kadai with oil , add urad dal and saute till it is slightly brown in color then add mustard seeds and let it splutter.Add curry leaf and saute for a min.
Notes
  1. This chutney tastes good without tempering too
  2. Adjust chili powder as per spice level
  3. Serve it with Idly,dosa,oats upma
